Wix Website Not Working in Toronto
Wix is one of the most common website platforms among GTA contractors — it is easy to set up and costs nothing to start. The problems come later, usually after a business has been running for a year or two and starts losing leads to competitors with faster, better-configured sites.
This page covers the most common Wix problems reported by Toronto-area contractors, how to diagnose them, and when it makes more sense to fix the site versus build something new.
Why Wix Websites Break for Contractors
Wix is a closed platform. Unlike WordPress, you cannot access the underlying code, database, or server configuration. This means:
- You cannot install third-party caching or speed tools
- SSL and HTTPS are managed by Wix and sometimes misconfigure after domain changes
- Forms use Wix’s own email delivery infrastructure, which has spam delivery problems
- Wix controls updates — you cannot roll back when something breaks
- Mobile layouts are partially separate from desktop and require manual adjustment
Most Wix problems are not user error. They are platform limitations that surface as your site grows or your needs change.
Common Wix Problems in the GTA
Contact Form Not Sending Emails
Wix form submissions frequently fail to reach the contractor’s inbox. The most common causes:
- Wix notification emails landing in the spam or promotions folder
- Form email address not verified or incorrectly set in the Wix dashboard
- Spam filters flagging Wix’s shared sending infrastructure
- Form submission limit reached on free or basic plans
What to check: Log into Wix → Inbox and verify submissions are arriving there, even if the email notification is not reaching you. If submissions appear in the Wix Inbox but no email arrives, the problem is delivery — not the form itself.

Site Loading Slowly
Wix sites are notoriously heavy. The platform loads a large JavaScript bundle on every page regardless of what content is on it. For a contractor’s homepage, this typically results in:
- Google PageSpeed scores in the 40–65 range on mobile
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) over 4 seconds on slower connections
- Layout shift from late-loading images and widgets
Unlike WordPress or a custom site, you cannot meaningfully optimise a Wix site’s loading speed. The platform controls the rendering pipeline. You can compress images and remove unnecessary Wix apps, but the core performance ceiling is low.
See Website Slow on Mobile for how this affects lead generation.
Not Showing on Google
A Wix site can rank on Google, but it has structural SEO limitations:
- URL structure is not fully customizable (Wix adds
/post/prefixes to blog URLs) - Page titles and meta descriptions are easy to miss in the Wix editor
- Wix’s sitemap is auto-generated and cannot be manually controlled
- Internal linking is harder to manage compared to CMS alternatives
- Page load speed — a confirmed ranking factor — is structurally limited
If your Wix site is not showing on Google for your trade and city, the issues are usually missing meta titles, no Google Business Profile link, and slow load times. See Website Not Showing on Google and Google Business Profile for the full diagnosis process.
Mobile Layout Broken
Wix uses a separate mobile editor that does not automatically inherit changes made on desktop. After editing a desktop layout, contractors often find the mobile version is broken — overlapping text, cut-off images, or a hamburger menu that does not open.
This requires manually fixing the mobile editor view after any significant desktop change. If the mobile menu stopped working after a recent edit, see Contact Form Issues for related troubleshooting steps.
SSL or “Not Secure” Warning
Wix provides SSL by default, but after connecting a custom domain it sometimes takes 24–48 hours to activate. If the SSL fails to activate, or if the site is accessed via a non-HTTPS URL that Wix is not redirecting, browsers show the Not Secure warning.
This is especially common after:
- Transferring a domain to or from Wix
- Changing DNS settings at the registrar
- Connecting a subdomain for the first time
See Fix Not Secure Warning and SSL Errors for diagnosis steps.
Wix Apps Causing Conflicts
Wix has its own app marketplace. Some Wix apps slow down the site significantly, display incorrectly on mobile, or conflict with each other. Unlike WordPress plugins, Wix apps cannot be debugged at the code level — if one breaks, your only options are to remove it or contact Wix support.
When to Fix a Wix Site vs. Replace It
Fix it if:
- The problem is a specific, isolated issue (form delivery, SSL after domain change, a broken mobile section)
- The site is less than a year old and ranking reasonably well
- You are not losing leads due to speed or credibility problems
Replace it if:
- Google PageSpeed is consistently below 60 on mobile
- You are not getting leads despite decent traffic
- You have tried fixing the contact form multiple times
- You want to add service or location pages for local SEO growth — Wix’s SEO ceiling is low for this
- You are paying for Wix monthly and getting no measurable return
For GTA contractors on Wix who are ready to move to a platform that performs, see Replace Wix Website Toronto for what the transition looks like.
