Credential Recovery — Lost Hosting, Domain, or Admin Access
Overview
Credential recovery problems happen when a business owner no longer has working login access to a system their website depends on — the hosting account, the domain registrar, or the WordPress admin dashboard. This is common when a previous developer, an employee, or an agency originally set everything up and the login details were never handed over. Without access, even simple changes (renewing a domain, updating content, fixing an error) become impossible.
Common Scenarios
- a previous web developer or agency registered the domain or hosting account in their own name or email
- login details were only ever known by an employee who has since left
- the email address tied to the account no longer exists or isn’t checked
- two-factor authentication is enabled on a device the owner no longer has
- the domain registrar and hosting provider are different companies and only one set of credentials was kept
How the Problem Appears
- password reset emails go to an inbox the business no longer controls
- the domain is at risk of expiring because renewal notices go unseen
- WordPress admin login fails and there’s no way to trigger a password reset
- hosting provider support won’t make changes without proof of account ownership
How It Is Diagnosed
- checking the domain’s WHOIS/registrar record to identify who it’s registered under
- reviewing DNS records to identify the actual hosting provider
- checking for any surviving admin access (FTP, database, or a secondary WordPress user)
- contacting the registrar and host directly to establish the account-recovery process each requires
Typical Fix
- verify business ownership with the registrar and hosting provider (often requires ID, a business document, or a domain transfer authorisation code)
- transfer the domain and hosting account into the owner’s own accounts and credentials going forward
- reset WordPress admin access via database-level password reset if no working admin account exists
- document and securely store all new credentials so this doesn’t recur

Credential recovery is included at no extra charge with any TradesAdmin project. Once access is restored, your domain and hosting stay registered in your name — nothing about your site’s infrastructure is held by a third party.
