Call Tracking for Contractors

Overview

Most GTA contractors spend money on Google Ads, HomeStars, and SEO at the same time — but have no way to know which one is actually driving phone calls. Call tracking assigns a unique phone number to each marketing source and routes all calls to your real number, logging who called, when, and from where. Without it, you’re making budget decisions blind.

What Causes This?

  • using one business phone number across every platform, ad, and page
  • no analytics tool connected to the phone number on the website
  • google ads conversions set up for form fills only, not calls
  • assuming google analytics shows call data when it doesn’t by default
  • relying on asking callers “how did you find us?” — which is unreliable
  • not knowing that google local services ads tracks calls separately from regular google ads

What Does It Look Like?

  • money going to google ads or homestars with no proof it’s producing calls
  • google ads dashboard showing impressions and clicks but zero call conversions
  • no way to compare whether organic SEO or paid ads are generating more leads
  • seasonal campaigns running without knowing if the phone is ringing because of them
  • shutting off a marketing channel that was actually working because results looked flat

How to Diagnose It

  • check google ads conversion tracking — confirm whether phone calls are set up as a conversion action
  • open google analytics and look for call events — if there are none, call tracking isn’t installed
  • review whether the phone number on the website is a static number or a dynamic tracking number
  • check if google business profile calls are being tracked separately from the website
  • test each marketing source (ad, organic, homestars, nextdoor) and confirm whether calls from each can be distinguished in any reporting tool

How to Fix It

  • use a call tracking platform like CallRail or CallTrack.ca and create a unique number for each source — google ads, organic, homestars, nextdoor, truck wrap, etc.
  • set up dynamic number insertion (DNI) on the website so the displayed number swaps automatically based on how the visitor arrived
  • add google ads call extensions and configure calls as a conversion action with a minimum duration (30 seconds minimum is reasonable for a contractor lead)
  • connect call tracking data to google analytics so all lead sources appear in one place
  • for google local services ads, monitor calls directly inside the LSA dashboard and dispute invalid calls promptly — google credits them back
  • review call recordings weekly to identify missed calls, poor answering habits, or repeat callers who didn’t book
